Expanding the Conversation on Environmentalism and Working for Environmental Justice

A Review of The Land Ethic by Aldo Leopold

A Sand County Almanac: The Land Ethic Aldo Leopold begins his last chapter by presenting a harsh tale of Odysseus, a Greek hero who returned home from his journey and, with no hesitation or remorse, hanged many of his slaves for rumors of their disobedience when he was away. In modern times, this act of punishment would seem cruel and lacking of any moral justice whatsoever, but Leopold stresses that in ancients’ ...more »

Buffalo Wild Wings lack of recycling

It was brought to my attention that BWW uses all paper products for plates. I was talking to a former server that worked briefly for the company and she explained that due to lack of space they don't have a dish room. I was appalled and immediately thought of all the needless waste going into our landfills.I don't know how to go about investigating the validity of this claim and if it's true what could be done to change ...more »

Assuring the Safety of Chemicals

Air quality related to car emissions.

Ask that local police check for valid emission test receipts from drivers they stop, and from drivers whose vehicles are visibly emitting noxious and profuse smoke. This includes school buses which I see many driving down highways and streets with noxious, blue smoke escaping from their tailpipes. I know that Illinois will not allow drivers to renew their state vehicle tags without an emissions pass (every two years), ...more »

Save hundreds of gallons of gasoline

I was recently stuck in a traffic jam heading into the Lincoln Tunnel, travelling eastbound from NJ to NYC. When I was stopped for more than a minute or two, I shut off my engine. When the traffic started to move again, I discovered that I did not have to turn my engine back on because the incline of the road, in the last mile leading to the tunnel, is steep enough so that when I simply let off my brakes, my car began ...more »

Make simple living seem like a Cool idea

Create a game (for all ages) where you compete to use as few resources as possible, and enlist some popular recognizable faces to help promote it. A few opportunities for a younger person to experience actively reducing resource use will get them thinking and creating on their own. At our house, we play "living at sea on a sailboat", so we think of how much water and electricity we use, and how to make healthy dried food ...more »

Spray Foam Dangers

The public needs to be made aware of the dangers of Spray Foam Insulation. My family is in a situation in which bad spray foam was applied in our home. After air quality testing and foam sample testing we are stunned at the number of harmful chemicals found in this product. We have ongoing health issues and have vacated our home until this can be properly removed. We are not alone, a simple search on the web of bad spray ...more »

Mercury Use in Humans

When my son was diagnosed with Autism I became aware of how very toxic Mercury is. I am aware that much of the Mercury used in this country comes from use in filling teeth. I think that this practice is archaic, particularly since there are other alternatives for filling teeth. I think it is time that Mercury is banned from use in the mouth or any product that is ingested or injected. It is so highly toxic, and ...more »
